Braces, part I - Update

It's been 5 days since the spacers have gone in, and they're still killing me. Ibuprofen hasn't done much, and Anbesol only lasts for 5 minutes, so I've switched to Aleve, and frequent warm salt water rinses. Unfortunately, I think I've been over-massaging my upper gums, and I've developed lots of tiny canker sores (which sting like hell when I do the salt water rinse). Ugh! Tomorrow I have a dentist appointment for cleaning and to check on cavities. I hope they really numb my mouth, because otherwise I won't be able to take it. Mouth related things never seem to go well for me; I always seem to take longer to heal/hurt more than most people. I don't think it's because I'm a wimp (as my bf lovingly chuckled earlier! bah) - maybe my mouth is just particularly sensitive? Or maybe I need to stop doing things to it while it's that time of the month! Either way, I hope the pain subsides soon. I have a paper to write, and it's been extremely difficult to concentrate.

Update to the Update: Just got back from the dentist. I need to get a filling next week in my upper left molar, and I have to come back for another cleaning next Monday. Joy. And I had to pay $118 (came out of my checking, NOT my credit card. I will probably switch $100 from my emergency fund to cover this). I need to switch to a PPO, asap. At least I have some positive teeth related news today - the spacers pain has significantly subsided. Yay!

I am absolutely no good with dentists. :/ I shudder to think of how many cavities I have that need to be drilled and filled, plus some that have fallen out... Oh, and the lecture I'm bound to get, not only about taking better care of my teeth, but for going and getting my tongue pierced...

I always figured I'll wait until I can pay for a complete overhaul with a cosmetic dentist. Maybe one who works on former meth users... So my teeth don't look so bad. ;) (They really aren't, except that I had a bad dentist as a small kid so I've done the opposite of everything they've ever told me. Usually to my detriment, but it's still hard to undo the years of learned behavior.)

I used to be really bad about going to the dentist, but since finding my current dentist I've gone regularly and I've noticed a lot of improvement. My gums don't bleed as much, my mouth seems cleaner, and my breath smells fresher.

It helps that my dentist has the cutest dogs EVER at her office. ;) It's part of a university study (I assume on whether the dogs assuage patients' fears?). They're these huge golden retrievers, and they come up to you during your cleanings and put their head on your lap and snuggle your hand... I think I keep my appointments just to see them. lol!

I'm glad you're feeling better. Dentist appointments are pushed back from us because we don't have insurance.

Awwwww, I'd love having a dog sit with me! It would be enough to make me go, lol, since I can't have a dog of my own yet...

Yeah, I can't have a dog yet either. :( So I live the dream through my dentist's dogs, and my friends' dogs. My favorite friends are the ones with pets, lol!
