Apartment Hunt Over!

We found our apartment today! The vibe just felt right from this place... plus it has pretty much everything we were looking for. :)

  • $1200
  • 1 bedroom
  • 1.5 mi from M's work
  • laundry in building
  • 1 parking spot
  • lease starts no earlier than mid-June, may start end of June
  • Really nice landlord :)
It has the added feature of being across the street from a park with a swimming pool and tennis courts! It's a well-maintained park too, well-lit, and it seems the community actually cares about it. There are some other parks around here that might as well have a sign designating them "for the bums and the drunks."

So, we definitely want it. Here comes the harder part... they have two units available. Will you guys help us choose?? M and I are being really indecisive.

Unit 1 - Downstairs
Pros
  • no stairs
  • easy access to the laundry room
  • can buy air conditioning unit from previous tenants for $50
  • mirrored closet doors
Cons
  • living room window opens up to courtyard where the other tenants walk
  • probably hear footsteps from up above
  • probably doesn't get too much light

Unit 2 - Upstairs
Pros
  • slightly bigger
  • ceilings are higher
  • bathroom vanity area has a longer counter
  • everything will be new for our move-in (carpets, kitchen, etc)
  • probably gets more light
  • less likely to kill you in an earthquake (this was M's addition :p)

Cons
  • stairs
  • farther walk to laundry room
  • would have to buy/install air conditioning unit ourselves

Take the upstairs unit. I live in a lower unit that doesn't get much sunlight and it gets depressing. Re: laundry room, one flight of stairs really isn't a deal breaker.

upstairs! then you don't have to worry about loud upstairs neighbors rearranging their furniture at all hours of the night. (can you tell i live downstairs?) :)

Upstairs! I've lived on the 1st floor before and will never do it again if I can help it. You can hear everything above you. Plus, I feel safer leaving my windows cracked up on a higher level then on the ground floor where anyone could walk up to them.

I say upstairs too. If you have to leave your apartment to do laundry, you'll do it the same amount whether you have to wall across the hall or across the hall and down some stairs.

My vote is for upstairs--you may get tired but the exercise is good for you.

Air conditioners go for $100--even less on sale, and sometimes free on Craigslist.

Never underestimate the noise folks make walking by, especially in the summer, and as for overhead--you have NO idea how much noise that can be.

Go for the upper unit!

Upstairs! Quiet upstairs neighbors are a priceless (and unlikely) luxury, so take advantage of the chance not to have any!

Upstairs. I get tired sometimes but the upstairs is so worth it.

I would go with the upstairs one. It's great not having anyone above you.

As someone who chose a first floor unit partly because she didn't like stairs I vote for the upstairs unit. I could hardly ever keep my blinds open because people on the street and sidewalk could look right into my apartment. Much more privacy upstairs and a little walk won't kill you. Congrats on finding a place you like with a nice landlord (that is essential!).

Upstairs. Less chance of a break in, less street noise, and no noise from above.

Wow - consensus! :) I'm going to take another look at the upstairs on Saturday, and if everything looks good in the daylight we'll take it!
